The short answer: as soon as possible after your positive test. You can register directly — not via the GP, not at week 12. This article explains why early registration helps, what happens after you register, and what to expect.
Many women think they need to wait until they’ve had an ultrasound, or until their GP confirms the pregnancy. You don’t. Modern home pregnancy tests from the chemist are very reliable from the first day your period would be due. Two lines or a digital “pregnant” is enough to register with a midwifery practice.
At Femme Midwives in Den Haag you can register directly online. We call or email you within one working day to plan a first appointment, usually between 8 and 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Early registration has several practical advantages:
Some women want to wait until the first weeks pass before officially registering. Understandable — not every pregnancy continues. But you can also register “provisionally”: we will already plan your appointment but you can cancel without consequence if needed. That way you have peace of mind, and we have time to prepare your appointment.
You fill in our short online registration form. We need your name, date of birth, address, phone, the first day of your last period (if known), and your insurance details. Within one working day we call you to discuss your details and plan a first appointment. During that first appointment we go through your medical history, family background, lifestyle, and any questions you have.
Midwifery care in the Netherlands is fully covered by basic health insurance, with no excess (no “eigen risico”). You don’t need a referral from your GP. Make sure your Dutch health insurance is active — if you’ve recently moved here, we can point you to where to arrange it.
Don’t wait for an ultrasound or a GP visit. As soon as you have a positive test — register. Online registration with Femme takes only a few minutes.
