When should you register with a midwife in Den Haag?

The short answer: as soon as possible after your positive test. You can register directly — not via the GP, not at week 12. This article explains why early registration helps, what happens after you register, and what to expect.

Your positive test is enough

Many women think they need to wait until they’ve had an ultrasound, or until their GP confirms the pregnancy. You don’t. Modern home pregnancy tests from the chemist are very reliable from the first day your period would be due. Two lines or a digital “pregnant” is enough to register with a midwifery practice.

At Femme Midwives in Den Haag you can register directly online. We call or email you within one working day to plan a first appointment, usually between 8 and 10 weeks of pregnancy.

Why does early registration help?

Early registration has several practical advantages:

  • You secure your spot. Midwifery practices in Den Haag work with a maximum number of clients per month. The sooner you register, the surer you are of a place.
  • You have a point of contact for questions or complaints. If you suddenly have bleeding or pain in the first weeks, you know where to turn. Women who haven’t registered need to go through the GP’s out-of-hours service.
  • We can plan a term scan in time. We do this scan around week 10–12 to establish your due date. Early registration means calm planning.
  • You start counselling on time. Around 8–10 weeks we discuss prenatal screening (NIPT, 13-week and 20-week scans). The NIPT is performed between 10 and 14 weeks — so don’t leave registration too late.

What if you’re not yet sure?

Some women want to wait until the first weeks pass before officially registering. Understandable — not every pregnancy continues. But you can also register “provisionally”: we will already plan your appointment but you can cancel without consequence if needed. That way you have peace of mind, and we have time to prepare your appointment.

How registration at Femme works

You fill in our short online registration form. We need your name, date of birth, address, phone, the first day of your last period (if known), and your insurance details. Within one working day we call you to discuss your details and plan a first appointment. During that first appointment we go through your medical history, family background, lifestyle, and any questions you have.

Practical: insurance & costs

Midwifery care in the Netherlands is fully covered by basic health insurance, with no excess (no “eigen risico”). You don’t need a referral from your GP. Make sure your Dutch health insurance is active — if you’ve recently moved here, we can point you to where to arrange it.

Summary: as soon as you have a positive test

Don’t wait for an ultrasound or a GP visit. As soon as you have a positive test — register. Online registration with Femme takes only a few minutes.
