Positive pregnancy test: what now?

You have a positive test in your hand. Happiness, confusion, questions, often everything at the same time. In this article we answer the three most frequently asked first questions, in the order in which they usually come.

Positive pregnancy test in hands

1. Is the test reliable?

Modern pregnancy tests from the drugstore are very reliable, starting from the day your period should start. If you have two lines (or a digital 'pregnant'), then you are pregnant in almost all cases. A second test for confirmation is not necessary, but is of course allowed.

2. What should you really do now?

Just two things really, and neither of them in a hurry:

Do you have medication or a health complaint? Check with your doctor or call us, we will think along with you.

3. And if I have doubts or don't know what I want yet?

That's okay too. Not every pregnancy immediately feels like joy. There may be practical, emotional or relational questions. Register if you need a conversation, our midwives will also talk to you about doubts, without judgement.

What is necessary not now?

Many people think that they have to arrange everything immediately. That's not necessary. You can wait with:

  • Applying for maternity care (possible around weeks 12–16)
  • Buy baby stuff
  • Make a birth plan
  • Take out special insurance

What is nice to do in advance: take rest, eat a varied diet and do not drink alcohol. If you have questions about food and drinks, view the current information nutritional advice for pregnant women.
