Counselling session: making your choice calmly

In a counselling session we calmly explain which prenatal screenings exist, what they mean and which choice fits you. No pressure, no judgement — just clear information.

Counselling for prenatal screening at Femme Midwives Den Haag
What is counselling?

A conversation that helps you choose

In the Netherlands every pregnant woman is offered a counselling session around 8–10 weeks about prenatal screening. It’s part of the national PNS programme (Programma Prenatale Screening) run by RIVM. Participation is always voluntary — you decide whether to take part and which screenings.

At Femme we take ample time for this session. We explain what each screening involves, what information it provides and what the next steps would be. Important: we give information, you decide.

Which screenings do we discuss?

The counselling covers the three screenings offered under PNS:

  • NIPT — blood test on you around 10–14 weeks, screening for Down, Edwards and Patau syndromes
  • 13-week ultrasound — early screening scan for physical anomalies
  • 20-week ultrasound — detailed scan of your baby’s development

For each screening we discuss what is measured, what the result does and doesn’t say, what the personal costs are, and what next steps are if something is noted.

It’s your choice

Counselling is not advice to participate or decline. It’s a conversation that objectively informs you so you can make a choice that fits you and your partner. Some women know in advance; others need time or a second conversation. Both are fine.

When is the right time?

The best moment is around 8–10 weeks. NIPT can be done from 10 weeks; the 13-week scan happens between 12+3 and 14+3 weeks. Booking early gives you space to consider everything calmly.

Cost

The counselling session is fully covered by Dutch basic insurance, with no excess. Even if you decide not to take any screening after the conversation, you owe nothing.
