Ultrasounds during your pregnancy, explained

Which ultrasounds are standard, which are optional?

During a normal pregnancy you will receive 5 ultrasounds as standard, all reimbursed by basic insurance. In addition, additional ultrasound scans may be necessary if medically indicated, or you can opt for a keepsake ultrasound scan if you want to take a closer look at your baby.

Term ultrasound (10–12 weeks)

The first ultrasound confirms the pregnancy, determines the exact due date and determines whether there are one or more babies. We measure the head-to-body length (CRL) and determine the term based on that. A small moment that often means a lot: you see something growing for the first time.

13 week ultrasound

The first extensive ultrasound where we look at the development of your baby, head, trunk, limbs and organs. This ultrasound has been a standard part of Dutch pregnancy care since 2021.

20-week ultrasound, extensive structural examination

The most important ultrasound, also called SEO (Structural Ultrasound Examination). We look extensively at the development of your baby, all organs, growth and the amount of amniotic fluid. This ultrasound takes approximately 30–45 minutes.

Growth ultrasound and position ultrasound (on indication)

We do a growth ultrasound if we want to monitor whether your baby is growing properly, usually in the third trimester. A position ultrasound around 36 weeks shows how your baby is lying, which is important for your preparation for delivery.

Ultrasounds at Femme, in our own practice

Unlike many other practices, we do all standard ultrasounds ourselves, in our own practice on Boekhorststraat. No additional appointments at another address. Our sonographers Karen, Judith, Helia and Shanice are certified and affiliated with the professional association BEN. We work with modern equipment and take our time with each ultrasound.

What can you expect?

An ultrasound at Femme takes 20 to 30 minutes (the 20-week ultrasound is longer). You lie on an examination couch, you get some gel on your stomach and the sonographer calmly moves the ultrasound head over your stomach. We explain what we see, which helps you understand what's happening on the screen. Your partner or a loved one can be there. You will of course take a photo of your ultrasound home with you.

Costs and reimbursement

All standard ultrasounds (term, 13-week ultrasound, 20-week ultrasound and indicated growth/position ultrasound) are 100% reimbursed by basic insurance, without deductible. A keepsake ultrasound (experiential ultrasound without medical indication) is available on request at a rate; This is not a medical examination and is not a substitute for prenatal screening.

In addition to the medical ultrasound scans, Femme also offers a keepsake ultrasound scan: a quiet, relaxing moment to look at your baby with your partner or loved ones. No medical examination, but a beautiful experience, and of course you take images home with you.
