Your journey at Femme

This is what your process looks like, from registration to maternity

No pregnancy is the same. That is why we not only look at medical checks, but also at your questions, wishes and feelings. This way you always know where you stand.

Postnatal period and aftercare at Femme Verloskundigen in The Hague

What happens after you register?

After you register online, we will call you personally within one working day. During this telephone conversation we will calmly discuss your situation, answer your first questions and plan your intake at a time that suits you. We will contact you personally, everything you know is enough to get started.

First appointment: intake and introduction

Your first appointment will take approximately one hour. We get to know you, ask about your health and any previous pregnancies, explain the process and discuss your wishes. It is also the time to express your preference between individual care and... group care (Centering Pregnancy) to discuss.

Term ultrasound (10–12 weeks)

We plan the treatment between 10 and 12 weeks term echo. We confirm the pregnancy, determine your exact due date and look at the number of babies. At the same time we can provide information about prenatal screening (NIPT, 13-week ultrasound).

Follow-up checks

We will be in regular contact during your pregnancy. In the beginning about every 4 weeks, later more often. Each check consists of:

  • Measuring blood pressure — to monitor whether everything remains in balance
  • Listen to your heart — audible from about 12 weeks
  • Assess growth — from 20 weeks we feel how your baby is lying and growing
  • Ultrasounds if necessary — including the 13 week ultrasound and 20 week ultrasound
  • Discussing questions and complaints — everything that concerns you is welcome

Blood tests at the practice

Blood tests are part of standard pregnancy care. At Femme you have your own blood collection point at the practice — no additional hospital visit necessary.

Preparing for childbirth

Around week 30 we will discuss your birth plan in detail. What wishes do you have? Do you want to give birth at home or in the hospital? Which poses feel good? We have a birthing stool and TENS device available to borrow for anyone who wants them. We also work with teachers from pregnancy courses in The Hague.

The birth

A Femme midwife will supervise your birth, at home or in the hospital (HMC Westeinde or HagaZiekenhuis). We are available 24/7 by telephone for registered clients via our emergency line.

Postnatal period and aftercare

In the first week after delivery, we visit several times to check mother and baby. We work closely with your maternity nurse and help you with nutrition, recovery and the new rhythm at home. We will discuss this if necessary after the maternity week contraception and you can contact us for aftercare questions.

Customized care

No pregnancy is the same. Do you have medical details, a specific wish or a question that falls outside the standard? We look together to see what is appropriate. At Femme we work with a close-knit team where no question is too crazy.
